Power outage planned in Bar Harbor

The power is going to go out again early Wednesday, but this time it is a planned outage by Emera Maine.

The electrical distribution company indicated in a release issued Tuesday that the outage will enable Emera crews to repair a transmission line that was damaged by a tree limb when Tropical Storm Arthur blew through the Gulf of Maine during the Fourth of July weekend. The planned outage is scheduled to last from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23.

Areas in Bar Harbor affected by the outage are expected to include the downtown village and customers along Eden Street between downtown and the bluffs overlooking Frenchman Bay. Customers along Eagle Lake Road between downtown and Young’s Corner substation, on Main Street between downtown and The Jackson Laboratory, and in the village of Otter Creek also will be affected, the company said.

There has been a series of outages in downtown Bar Harbor this summer, which has frustrated downtown business owners. The issue of outages during the busy summer tourist season has been a topic of frequent local discussion sincea July 4, 2006 outage affected many downtown businesses.

Emera officials have said that improving service to Bar Harbor has been a priority for the company for several years and is the reason why Emera is pursuing plans to build a new substation in the downtown area.
