Bar Harbor ‘Starship’ for Sale

Another mansion on Mount Desert Island is on the market – one I was unaware of before the real estate listing popped up recently on my Facebook feed.

For a cool $5.3 million, it can be yours.

It is not one of the island’s more historic (late 19th/early 20th-century) properties, several of which got a mention in my recent article about MDI mansions. This one – called ‘Starbird‘ – was built only 20 years ago, in 1993, according to the town’s official online assessing database.

realtor.com description says the house is a “starship-looking architectural home” designed by Frank Lloyd Wright disciple James Walter Schildroth. It sits at the south end of town, overlooking Frenchman Bay and Champlain Mountain, and has around 7,500 square feet of living space, including three full bedrooms and 5-1/2 baths, spread out among four floors. Yes, it has an elevator. The combined assessed value of the mansion and the 5-acre lot it sits on is $1.5 million.

If you buy it because you found out about its availability from this blog post, I’ll hope you’ll invite me over next summer for a weekend visit.
